Every morning, the old sailor rowed out before the sun. He said he was fishing, but he never brought a net.
He was waiting for a whale called Hope. Years ago, he had seen her in the ocean, a dark shape under the water, moving like a slow cloud.
That day, his boat had been caught in a storm. He was alone, and he was sure he would not see land again. Then the whale rose beside him and stayed until the water calmed. She led him to a small island.
The sailor never forgot her. He told everyone who would listen. Some people smiled. Some did not believe him. But he kept rowing out.
One morning, he saw a dolphin leap. Then another. The water was full of small silver lights. A jellyfish floated past his oar, soft as a lantern.
And then the water opened. Hope rose slowly, her back shining with sea water. She was older now, and so was he.
The sailor did not try to touch her. He only said, "Thank you." The whale looked at him with one dark eye, then slipped back into the sea.
People ask him why he goes out every day. "For courage," he says. "The sea teaches you that even a small boat can wait for a big heart."
A thought to keep
Gratitude can keep a person rowing out, year after year.
