The forest was white with snow. In the old tree, a squirrel looked at her winter food. She had saved many nuts. There was enough for the cold months.
Then a small rabbit knocked on the tree. "I cannot find food," said the rabbit. "The snow is too deep."
The squirrel looked at her nuts. She wanted to keep them all. But the rabbit looked hungry and cold.
"Wait here," said the squirrel. She came down with a little bag of nuts. "Take these."
The rabbit's eyes grew big. "Are you sure?"
"Yes," said the squirrel. "I can find more. You cannot."
Later, a deer came through the snow. The deer had found a bush with red berries. "I heard a rabbit say you were kind," said the deer. "Take some berries for your winter."
The squirrel smiled. She had given a little, and the forest had given back.
That night, the squirrel sat in her warm tree. Her food was smaller than before, but her heart was full. Winter is easier when the forest shares.
A thought to keep
A little sharing can warm a whole winter.
