The conversation is moving, and you do not know one word. Most learners stop. Do not stop. You have four easy ways to keep going.

Describe it

Use words you know to explain the word you do not know.

It is a small thing. You use it to open a bottle.

Use "thing" and "kind of"

These two words save many sentences.

It is a kind of fruit. It is yellow.

Say what it is not

Sometimes the opposite is easier.

It is not hot. It is the opposite of cold.

Ask for the word

You are allowed to ask. Most people are happy to help.

What do you call this in English?

Check that you understood

Repeat the new word, and ask if it is right.

A bottle opener? Like this?

Write it down later

Do not stop the conversation to write. Note it after, and learn it tomorrow.

Words to remember

  • describe — to say what something is like
  • opposite — completely different, like hot and cold
  • kind of — a type of something
  • continue — to keep going

Questions & answers

Q: Is it bad to use "thing" all the time?

It is fine in a conversation. Learn the real words later, and use "thing" to keep talking.

Q: What if the other person does not understand?

Try again with simpler words, or show a picture on your phone.

Q: Can I use my own language?

For one word, yes. Then return to English.

Q: Should I write every new word down?

No. Choose the words you need again. Those are the ones to keep.

Q: How do I stop feeling embarrassed?

Remember: the other person wants to understand you. Asking is helping them, not bothering them.
