People often ask you to repeat. It is tiring and embarrassing. The answer is not to speak louder. Clear English comes from small habits, not a stronger voice.

Slow down

Speak a little slower than feels natural. Your listener needs time.

Slow is not stupid. Slow is clear.

Finish your words

Do not swallow the end of a word. Say the last sound.

I want to go. Not now.

Pause at full stops

Many learners run sentences together. Stop at the full stop. Breathe.

I went to the shop. (pause) I bought bread.

Say the important word louder

Put stress on the word that carries the meaning.

I want coffee, not tea.

Look at the listener

If they look confused, stop and say it again, more slowly. Their face tells you.

Practise one sentence

Choose one sentence and say it five times, slowly. Then say it in a normal voice.

Words to remember

  • clear β€” easy to understand
  • pause β€” a short stop
  • stress β€” the strong part of a word
  • repeat β€” to say again

Questions & answers

Q: Will slowing down make me sound strange?

No. Slow, clear English sounds confident. Fast, unclear English sounds nervous.

Q: How do I stop mumbling?

Open your mouth more and finish each word. Record yourself once a week.

Q: Should I copy a native speaker?

Copy the rhythm, not the accent. Rhythm makes you clear.

Q: What if people still do not understand?

Say it again with simpler words. Clear language plus clear speech works.

Q: Does clear speech help in exams?

Yes. Examiners understand you better, and your score improves.
